Friday 21st April was a day of jubilation at the iconic Harleyford Estate Marina as guests gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of the newly completed second lagoon with a very special ‘guest of honour’.

Harleyford Marina Grand Opening

Attendees were treated to a day of celebration to commemorate the opening of the new extension which, at nearly 3 times as large as the existing lagoon, provides an additional 122 berths to this stunning marina and mooring location along the Thames. Key stakeholders involved in the 7 month project were in attendance including Harleyford Estate’s owners The Folley family, key Marlow community representatives, marina staff and moorers, principal contractors Greenford Ltd, as well as subcontractors and suppliers involved in the works. This grand opening celebration was not only significant in its commemoration of the delivery of this impressive project and its official opening to the public, but also by the presence of a very special guest to open the newly transformed marina – Judith R.

The Judith R is an impressive art deco yacht built in 1935 for Barnaby Balaban, the head of the iconic American film company Paramount Pictures. The film industry big wig used the art deco masterpiece to travel to and from his office in Manhattan every day as well as host lavish A-List parties and private soirees. Now in 2017, this vessel resides in the UK having been lovingly restored by its current owners, and served as the main attraction at Friday’s grand opening celebration.

To officially open the updated marina, Harleyford Estate’s Chair Lady Angela Folley stood at the bow of the Judith R as it sailed through the 14m wide channel joining the original and new lagoons, cutting the ceremonial ribbon stretched across the entrance. Mrs Folley said “It was wonderful to be able to commemorate the day in such a spectacular way on such a beautiful vessel. After the years of planning and hard work we are thrilled to finally have the second lagoon open and it has wonderful to share this day with the key stakeholders involved in the works as well as our valued friends and customers.”

Harleyford Marina Grand OpeningThe transformation of this previously unutilised patch of land resulted in a beautiful and modern extension to the existing lagoon with little to no disturbance to moorers or day to day operations. Riparian specialist civil engineering firm Greenford Ltd were selected to complete the works given their extensive experience with similar projects in the past. Greenford Director Peter Hawley said “We were thrilled to be a part of the transformation of this iconic marina. Harleyford Estate is synonymous with style and quality which is what we worked to deliver with the design and delivery of their new second lagoon.”

Construction began August 2016 and was completed by March 2017. The works included excavation of the new lagoon, sheet piling and bank strengthening, new access roads, electrical service bollards, pontoons, parking facilities as well as soft landscaping to ensure a seamless insertion into the existing natural landscape. Harleyford Estate have always taken exceptional care to develop the marina without compromising the natural beauty of the surrounding area and ensuring the facilities and service provided are second to none, having received the 5 Gold Anchor award since 1986.

Harleyford Marina is part of the Harleyford Estate and is located on the Thames between Temple and Hurley Lock. For information regarding the existing marina and booking enquiries see the Harleyford Estate website –
